Save takayna / Tarkine

Mining company MMG wants to destroy 285 hectares of rainforest in takayna / Tarkine and melaleuca forest to dump twenty five million cubic metres of toxic, acid-producing mine tailings.
Threatened is World Heritage value rainforests and critical breeding habitat for the Tasmanian Masked Owl.
This area is home to numerous endangered species, including the Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle, the Tasmanian Devil and the Spotted-tailed Quoll.

Vulnerable to extinction, the Tasmanian Masked Owl is suffering from loss of its ancient forest habitats across the island. They rely on hollow bearing old trees for survival.
The owl, its life-partner and their kin will only survive if the proposed tailings waste dump is stopped. There is still time
Our Foundation has held MMG's machinery back since December 2020, but the company is pushing ahead for federal environmental approvals.

Take action for takayna
Email Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek and ask her to not approve the destruction of this amazing forest.
From our vigil camp in the canopy and on the forest floor we are inviting you to come and be in these amazing rainforests.
Become and earth defender and help fund direct action and resource our frontline forest actions.
Tell Minister Plibersek to Protect Tarkine Rainforests
We need you to urge Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to use her powers under the Environment protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to reject this proposal to destroy ancient wild forests and habitat for rare and endangered wildlife.
The proposed 140-hectare tailings dam in the takayna / Tarkine rainforests will be seventy times bigger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It will be filled with toxic, acid-leaching mine waste pumped over the Pieman River and into the rainforest.
The Federal Environment Minister has the power to reject this project.
Join takayna's defenders back back in the threatened rainforest treetops.
Join us and bobbrownfoundation for a night of short films exploring the biodiversity of Tarkine/takayna and the community resistance against its destruction from mining.

DEFENDING TAKAYNA
We have wrapped up our takayna forest resistance skillshare and it was empowering, adventurous, intensive learning and fun filled. We will be hosting another skillshare in these forests next month, stay tuned for dates.
Today we also had visitors from Wynyard, families headed into the threatened ancient rainforests to learn about all the plants and wildlife that are thriving but threatened.
The vast are of rainforests and surrounding melaleuca forests and tall eucalyptus can be saved by @tanyaplibersek
Our Basecamp in these forests are filled with campaigners and citizen defenders, there is a revolving community through them and we need more people all the time to join us.
You’d be spending time in a communal camp learning about the forests threatened by mining company MMG, who wants to build a heavy metals waste dump and destroy 285 hectares of world heritage value forests.

TAKAYNA TREE VIGIL
From Jenna, Today I spent the morning in a beautiful Myrtle tree with my dear friend and activist Viola. We sat, meditated, talked, laughed and from 25 meters up in the rainforest canopy we watched see the birds playing and leaves sparkle like twinkle lights. It takes my breath away.
But my heart breaks as the mining company MMG want to destroy this forest for a toxic tailing dam.
I struggle to process this flawed thinking. At this time in our existence we need every tree standing. Especially this old growth forest.
So we will be here taking a stand and sending a clear message to MMG. This will not happen. Not on our watch. So come join us, sit in the forest and feel the magic.
We were also setting up more tree sits in the canopy today for our upcoming skillshare starting tomorrow evening.
Forest defenders on their way into takayna tomorrow will attend the @taclutruwita March in Devonport for #invasionday
Head to takayna this weekend to learn all about frontline action. Be in touch with courtney@bobbrown.org.au

TAKAYNA ANCIENT RAINFORESTS
lutruwita / Tasmania
Chez shares her experience in our takayna tree village:
“I had a friend heading to the tree village and I tagged along interested to see the beautiful takayna and meet the people who were camping there. Fast forward to now and I have a bunch of new values aligned friendships, completed my NVDA training and started to learn tree climbing. The village is open to everyone - come and see this majestic forest and experience the hope and empowerment that comes from being part of the community determined to save it.
This is a climate emergency and MMG plans to create a toxic tailings dam in the takayna rainforest. It’s hard to imagine how this decision is being made, especially when we know there are other options available which could save this wild place. As Tyto, the Treesitter says, we are not separate from this forest, we are the forest defending itself. When we center around the idea that our bodies are part of our ecosystem, extending past our skin and out into the wild places we live within, we understand that by flooding takayna with toxic waste, we are implicated in harming our own bodies, our own survival. We are not separate from nature.”
At our website you can write to Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek as she decides on the fate of this rainforest, its wildlife and our future.
👉🏽 Visit the LinkTree in our bio to sign the petition, contact Tanya Plibersek and find how about visiting these forests before it might be too late.

Climbing Tasmania’s ancient rainforests to defend then from destruction!
Simon Mentz and John Middendorf came to show their support to the blockaders holding camp now for 29 days, in the heart of Tasmania’s northwest, takayna, in opposition to the construction of a tailings waste facility from nearby Rosebery mine.
Simon got around to sharpening his activist tree-climbing skills, visiting Tyto up in the canopy who has been there since the first day of camp.
Tyto has been treesitting the entire time!
“Staghorn, my myrtle tree host in the middle of where MMG wants to put the proposed tailings waste dump.
It is just so ancient and magnificent here. Yes, it does feel mystical and beautiful and so very special. A wedge tailed Eagle flying over the thick myrtle canopy, just for me to glimpse. All the noises from the night animals. There is hopping, calling, landing in branches from all sorts of animals far to many to describe. The moon coming over the forest from sickle to full and back again. I just love it here and am so grateful for the experience.” Tyto in the treesit.
Thank you to everyone who supports the team on the ground. Every contribution is essential, and Tyto sure loves to have visitors!

Last night we were joined by four Newcastle based acts for a 'Folkade' concert on the site of MMG's proposed tailings dam. Ecopella, Bruce Watson, Triple Effect and Two Faces in the Crowd inspired us with songs of activism and passion, while the rainforest provided the stage to remind us what we are fighting for. Musicians (and everyone else) are always welcome at the blockade. To join us contact lisa@bobbrown.org.au

Day 18 of Tyto’s canopy occupation in takayna!
Life in her canopy home is full of art, music and discovering the takayna forest in a whole new way as swift parrots fly over head, wedge tailed eagles circle above, masked owls screeching at night and black cockatoos nest in a tree right next door.
As Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek deliberates on whether to grant Chinese government-owned miner MMG permission to dump 25million cubic metres of toxic, heavy metals tailings waste into rainforest at McKimmie Creek, we have re-occupied the rainforest and established a tree village in the treetops.
From our vigil camp in the canopy and on the forest floor we are inviting you to come and be in these amazing rainforests and visit while it is intact.
We have started our preparations to defend the owls, devils and other wildlife that call this ecosystem home.
Join us. Get in touch by emailing lisa@bobbrown.org.au

Thank you to the 50 people who came on today’s Open Day into this incredible rainforest, a patch of takayna (northwest lutruwita/Tasmania) threatened by MMG’s plans to flood the McKimmie Creek valley with 25million cubic metres of toxic, heavy metals tailings.
More and more locals are taking the time to come and experience and defend this precious land.
Spread the word, come and join us and see for yourself, one of the last remaining tracts of cool-temperate rainforest in the world.
